Caitlin has new working lungs, but the rest of her is struggling, and she needs all the energetic help she can get, along with everything her incredible doctors are giving her.
1. Her liver is still in tough shape, but the numbers were slightly better this morning.
2. She’s producing a lot of lactate, which generally indicates lack of tissue oxygenation, but they are not sure from where. We need to get that number down, and ensure adequate tissue oxygenation.
3. On ECMO, a patient’s pulses are checked constantly. They’ve lost detection of a pulse in her left leg/foot, which is her non-ECMO leg, but it is too risky to bring her back to the OR to try and figure out what is happening here.
Normally, transplant patients are forced out of bed, even in pain, right away, to get them moving, but that’s impossible right now. We have to take it one hour at a time.
That’s our update. We’re so thankful we are on the other side of this battle, but she’s been dropped right back into the trenches, immobile and very beaten up.

Thinking of you and send healing love! Many years ago my husband was in the ICU with some of the same dangers and I remember this difficult vigil. I would lightly put my hands on him and try to send healing prayer through them. It worked!.

I found a card from her today, about her comments on a story from about exactly a year ago. Nothing profound but seeing her words to me felt very special. She signed it with a heart and a little sketch of a Christmas tree. On the front is a tiny bird in winter. I have it up on the fridge now.
I am praying for her and talking directly to her, all the time. This is all so scary but I continue to have the utmost faith in her doctors and in HER. Her bravery and fighting spirit have long inspired me and continue to do so especially now.

I can’t really catch my breath… I keep coming back here every 15 minutes to check – wanting so badly to see positive news. Doug and I were just talking about it and he reminded me how fraught with peril the first 24 hours post op were because the body has to settle from all the trauma and accept the new organ… he sends love with me.
